Transforming Regional Mobility: The I-74 Mississippi River Bridge
Spanning the Mississippi River and connecting Bettendorf and Davenport, Iowa with Moline, Illinois, the new I-74 Bridge replaced an outdated structure that had become a major traffic bottleneck. The original bridge was over capacity for years, leading to frequent delays and ongoing maintenance issues. The new design more than doubled the previous width, offering four lanes in each direction to handle present and future traffic volumes. Construction began in July 2017 and concluded in December 2021, marking a major milestone for infrastructure in the Quad Cities region.
This essential crossing now supports faster, safer travel and greater commercial movement between Iowa and Illinois. The expanded capacity and modern engineering offer long-term benefits to regional commuters and freight traffic alike. With improved durability and increased lane space, the bridge stands as a critical upgrade to one of the Midwest’s most important transportation corridors.
20,000 Tons of Precision-Fabricated Steel by Industrial Steel Construction
In partnership with Lunda Construction, Industrial Steel Construction fabricated 20,000 tons of structural steel for both the westbound and eastbound spans of the I-74 Bridge. Each structure features a complex basket-handle arch design supported by custom-fabricated deck and approach girders. The bridge includes 30 steel arch rib boxes per bound, with over 200 girders installed on each approach—an enormous feat of coordination, accuracy, and heavy fabrication expertise.
Due to the size and complexity of the arch components, ISC shipped fully assembled boxes by barge directly from its Gary, Indiana facility. This method not only ensured precision but also helped streamline delivery to the job site. The scale, quality, and complexity of this project earned the bridge national recognition, receiving the Major Span Bridge of the Year Award in 2022, a testament to the innovation and excellence behind every piece ISC fabricated.

OUR FACILITY
Our Gary, Indiana, facility spans 1.6 million square feet under roof, making it the largest single-site bridge fabrication plant in the U.S. With cutting-edge technology like automated robotic welding and CNC machining, we handle complex bridge projects with precision. The facility also features 80 cranes and a 50,000-square-foot blasting and painting area to ensure top-quality fabrication.
